General rules of writing Letters To Editor:

  • The shortest, most concise, and to the point, while still getting your point across, the better!
  • Many Publications require you to provide full name, full home address, and day and evening telephone numbers for verification purposes (but, of course, will only put your name and city in publication). Letters should be the specified number of words or less and are always subject to editing for length, accuracy, and clarity, by the Publications Editorial staff.
  • Anonymous letters, photocopies, letters to third parties, and letters to other publications will not be considered [NOTE: Send individually (not bulk BCC) e-mails *ALSO* WRITE THEM GENERICALLY OR SIMPLY MAKE MINOR MODIFICATIONS TO MAKE THEM SPECIFIC PER PAPER/EDITOR -- see tips/tricks section (at bottom of page) for more info]. Letters, opinion pieces, and articles submitted may be published or distributed in print, electronic, or other forms.
  • To learn more about, or to join, the RWU Writers (RWUW) Group - see: RWU RWUW Committee Mission Statement).
To review RWU "Mission Statement" and "Beliefs, Principles, and Values" - see: RWU Beliefs, Principles, and Values.

TIPS, TRICKS, ETC…            TIPS, TRICKS, ETC…
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

  • A: You do NOT have to write ONLY in response to what has appeared in a Publication. You may write a generic Letter by starting with:
"I am concerned about" <topic/subject>.... (if appropriate: say you "don't see enough coverage" or the flip-side of "too much one sided coverage" or "it seems too few understand") and then go on to address your concerns.
This is a versatile approach to reaching (sending to) numerous Publications. This type of Letter can then be sent (e-mail, form submission, Postal mail, etc.) individually (not bulk e-mail BCC) to each Publication.
  • B: Write/Save your Letter/Comment (copy/paste to/from) a Word or Notepad document so that you may use it to copy/paste to/from other online, e-mail, etc, locations for Publication.
  • C: If your Letter (response to someone bad-mouthing Tea Parties) is going to mention "Rattle With Us - MI Tea Party" ensure that you make 100% CLEAR you writing as "a member" and "NOT speaking on behalf of the group, but providing your own individual personal opinion." Only the founding members speak on behalf of RWU itself.
  • D: When responding to a specific Story/Letter (for rebuttal) state the date (if known), original writer (if you recall), and subject matter, you are rebutting. Again, when done you can make minor modifications to make the first line(s) more generic regarding the subject matter (removing the date and original writer) so as to be able to send the same correspondence to other Publications (see Tips/Tricks "F").
  • E: Don't reinvent the wheel! A specific response to one Publication can often be used --- with only minor modifications --- to be a generic letter (sent individually to) ALL other Publications about the same subject [see General Rules #3 at top]. You may already have written an e-mail (or written and saved a Word-processor created letter *or* made an online post) to someone that can be copy/pasted and used with minor modification to become a new e-mail, letter, online post, etc.
  • F: Wanting to write but uncertain of what to write about?
Please consider writing about matters concerning the TEA Party. We will email you (if you are a RWU Writers Group member - see RWUW Sign-up) from time to time with subject matter and additional subject matter may be found via the RWU NING website (please check back every couple of weeks for new material)...
