Jobs, jobs, jobs... MICHIGAN - Will you rally to the "Freedom To Work" cause?

Dear friend of Labor Freedom:

On June 30, 2011, press conferences were held across the state of Michigan announcing the formation of Michigan Freedom to Work, (MIFTW) a non-profit organization whose singular mission is to make Michigan a Right to Work State.

Over the last six months, progress has been made.  MIFTW officially organized, launched a web site, began to raise funds, and build a grass roots support base numbering in the thousands. Every week the MIFTW blog is being updated and an e-newsletter is going to nearly 9,000 readers.   Over 75 organizations, including GOP county committees, TEA Party groups and municipal boards have endorsed resolutions of support.

The infrastructure to accomplish the goal is in place, but without a bill, nothing else matters. The original goal to introduce a bill by Labor Day was not reached, but a final draft is reportedly ready and we are optimistic that it will be introduced in January as the “Labor Freedom Act.”

To become law, this bill must pass the House and the Senate and be signed by the Governor.  Only Republicans, who control both chambers, can prevent the passage of the Labor Freedom Act.   While prospects in the House look promising, the Senate Majority Leader, Randy Richardville has been reluctant to support the Labor Freedom Act.

It is time to swing into action. All great movements have started in the grass roots. We need you, and we need you now! Here is what we are asking you to do:

  • Send an email, or place a phone call to bill sponsors, Senator Pat Colbeck and Representative Mike Shirkey. Thank them for their courage in taking the lead on introduction of the bills.  Forward this letter all your friends and encourage them to do the same.
  • Email or call the Governor, thanking him for his commitment to sign the Labor Freedom Act, (watch him support it here) and ask him to support its passage in the legislature.   Remind him that it was Republicans who elected him despite the millions spent by the union bosses to elect his opponent, and then attempt to recall him.  A sample letter is at the bottom of this newsletter. Here is the Governor’s contact information:

------- Sample Letter -------

Dear Gov. Snyder,

Michigan residents elected you to serve as our chief executive last year hoping that you would restore Michigan as an economic powerhouse.

Right to Work states have led the nation in job growth. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, from 1999 to 2009, the top five states for job growth, Right to Work states Texas, Florida, Arizona, Virginia and Nevada added over 1.6 million jobs. The bottom five states, compulsory union states, California, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio and Michigan lost over 1.9 million jobs, with Michigan at the very bottom.

Recently, Freedom to Work Coalition spokesman and UAW member, Terry Bowman wrote an Op-ed in the Detroit News which defended you from vicious union attacks.

As a current union member, he continues to risk his job and safety to defend freedom and choice for Michigan and its union workforce.

You have been quoted as saying that Freedom to Work is ‘too divisive’ and you use Wisconsin and Ohio as examples of why Michigan should not go down that path.  This gives the impression that you fear the union bosses and their ability to create havoc and chaos when they don’t get what they want. This is like saying we don’t want to make the playground better for all, because it will make the bully angry.

Governor Snyder, you were elected to make the tough choices, to re-invent Michigan – to bring economic stability and growth, liberty and freedom to your constituents.  You have demonstrated repeatedly that you are willing to stand up to the ‘bullies’ that oppose you.

As one of over 70,000 grassroots supporters of Michigan Freedom to Work, I ask you to do what is right; take the lead on the passage of the Labor Freedom Act.  Union members, residents, TEA Party groups, Republicans, Democrats, business leaders, coalition activists, and legislators from your own party are driving this forward to “truly” re-invent Michigan and provide Labor Freedom for all workers!
