Poll Challenger Comments/ Suggestions

Thank you to those that made it to the meeting tonight (11/18/10). A lot of good information was exchanged.

I am starting this blog as a way to collect suggestions to improve the training of poll challengers and share experiences.

2012 will be a major challenge for us. We need to be ready.

To start things off, here are a few things that came out of the meeting. Please add your suggestions and comments.

  • Change the rules to allow an affidavit ballot to be challenged.
  • Form a Challenger sub-committee

after being a poll challenger for the first time and going in quite nervous, I was glad to have been able to do it. I always say that I wish there was something that I could do ... and this was just a small contribution.

I work and live in a very liberal area and they have strong opinions, to say the least. I will say that they are very committed to what they believe and the candidate signs and 'their' volunteers exhibited that. Hooray to Joanne who pointed out that the candidate signs were too close to the entrance of the voting precincts and the Chairman immediately moved them himself.
Joanne and I shared 4 precincts in a gym in our city and she had a few tough challenges . I only had one, which involved a wrong name. I questioned it and was told "oh that could be a nickname" but I questioned it further saying " I'm sorry I don't understand how that name is the same ..." and again the Chairman looked into it and found that it was in fact, a different person.
It was a long day of comparing picture ID and names in the book but well worth it. There was a mutual respect between the poll workers and challengers. I sympathized with the poll workers as most of them are much older than me and had the arduous task of working from 6: a.m. to almost 9 p.m. with very few breaks.

Our relief person came in the afternoon and he was on his own with all of the precints until Joanne came back later . The mystery 4th person never showed up but we found out later, that there just weren't enough poll challengers to go around.

I strongly suggest that we have an indepth workshop so to speak, so that we can be well prepared to do the job and that in the next election, we will have an abundance of volunteers to help each other. Better yet, that we can get the job of poll workers.

In this holiday season of Thanksgiving, Hannukkah and CHRISTmas, we have much to be thankful for and hopeful for the future.

Voter fraud steals elections and cancels out the vote of a legal vote. Many of us
were Poll Challengers this last election. We observed many opportunities for voter
fraud. I know many folks want to know we have fair and honest elections.

I hope we can start learning about the registered voter process. Work with Clerks
to learn their process for keeping the Qualified Voter File up to date. How do they know
when a voter dies? What on the drivers license or state ID identifies a citizen? Legal
immigrants can get the same ID. How does a citizen obtain access to this information
or go through the QVF to determine if voters listed are eligible to vote?

2012 election is important and to know the election was honest and not subverted by fraudulent
votes should be a priority for us.

Here are some websites that may give us more information.
